The Method to our Madness

When you request a quote from us, we are going to ask you a few questions to figure out what you are really looking for, and what will make you happy! Because happy customers make us ecstatic. Below we have taken you through the process of how and why.

When we say we need to sand and treat the wood, what the heck are we talking about?

Well, besides making endless wood puns we need to take into consideration all the time that goes into getting the wood ready before we even do ANYTHING to it. No, wood doesn't always come pretty, we have to help it a little. I have put a picture below to demonstrate the comparison.

Okay, so depending on how badly the wood is possibly damaged, old, dirty etc. it can take approximately four different grits or more of sandpaper to get them smooth and ready for treatment. The whole process can take about one to three hours depending on how big the piece is.

So we’ve sanded, put your design on, burned it. What does wood treatment mean?

Depending on where you plan to put your piece outside or inside we have to put a protective coat on it. The coat is a sticky, glossy substance called Polyurethane, and there are all different kinds of it. Outdoor, indoor, stained, clear etc. Custom pieces that are going to be outside need about three to four coats of outdoor polyurethane. Each coat can take 4-24 hours to dry (very time consuming yes, but NEEDED). Without this extra step your beautiful art goes from beautiful to weathered, cracked and rotted.

Can you do the sanding and treating yourself?

Absolutely! If you would like to bring your own material already sanded and then treat it yourself when your design is done that is absolutely okay. Most people opt out of this option and prefer to pay the material charge instead. The material is usually about $20.00 depending on size of the piece/type of wood and or stain and protective coat we use.

How Big? “Oh I don’t know, I didn’t really think about that”!

We charge by square inch of the piece requested, and how complicated the piece is going to be. Simple word or sayings cost less per square inch than a complex design or graphic. This is why we request you ask for a quote because every piece is unique and we don’t have a one size fits all price.
